Downtown Dialogue - What's Up Downtown

Matt Mulkey
GM at Zucca Italian Ristorante

Matt was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia where the majority of his family still lives. He attended the University of West Georgia, and moved to Colorado in 2005. He worked at the Inverness Resort in Englewood for over five years, and then moved on to the Silverado Resort in Napa California for another four as the manager of the Resort and Spa. Although Matt enjoyed the experience in California, he really missed Colorado so moved back.

Matt started his career with Three Leaf Concepts, the restaurant group that owns Zucca, as well as The Huckleberry, Leaf Vegetarian, The Chautauqua Dining Hall, and The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse in 2016. Matt began as a manager of the Teahouse, and had served in almost all of the concepts when he was offered the position of General Manager of Zucca in 2018. Matt is a great fit for Zucca and for downtown Louisville with his focus on both family and hospitality. Matt lives in Lafayette with his wife and two daughters. In addition to spending time at the restaurant, Matt likes to read, hike, and focus on being a great dad.

Historic Preservation Building

This month in conjunction with the Historic Preservation Commission, we are featuring:

The Gorce Family House
625 Lincoln Ave.

625 Lincoln was the home of the Bittner family in the early 1900’s. For about 20 years in the mid-1900’s, it was associated with members of Louisville’s French community. For a period of four years 2003 to 2007, it was physically connected with a passageway to the historic house next door at 637 Lincoln.

Ralph Gorce and Leah LeComte Gorce purchased 625 Lincoln in 1936. Both were born in Colorado to parents who had emigrated from France. These were some of the families who had made up Louisville’s significant French community. Ralph served in the Army in WWI and worked as a miner. Following Leah’s death Ralph remarried another member of the French community. Mary Hioco was born in France and came to the US with her first husband, Henri Vanderstraten, and their young daughter Julienne. Henri had died in 1949.

Various other families owned the house after 1957, including Ben Schmidt and Stephanie Arenales, who joined it to the adjacent house. It has been most recently owned by the Hamlingtons.

What’s Hot Downtown for July, besides the weather...

The “Downtown Promenade” is a hit! These 3 blocks of Main that have been shut down to allow for the Downtown Outdoor Dining program is the biggest change and it’s lovely to see all the al fresco diners enjoying drinks and great food once again! Finally, more people walking around and enjoying our lovely historic downtown. If you haven’t checked it out, pop on down and stroll the streets. Bravo to all the businesses who are making the best of this crazy and daunting situation ‒ you are what make downtown so special! We do want everyone to continue to stay healthy ‒ no spikes ‒ so masks and social distancing are still in place, we appreciate your cooperation.

Louisville Rising

Business Support and Fundraising
Louisville Rising is a non-profit that was created to harness the infinite goodwill of our people to support the great need in our community. We wanted to help our small businesses and business owners by creating and supporting local events and to use these events to raise funds that will truly impact our community. Our first event is the Front Porch Concert Series presented by Eldorado Natural Spring Water, every Friday night at 6pm. The concept is to shop local, bring dinner and drinks home, gather with neighbors and friends and listen to live music from the comfort and safety of your own home, front porch, cul-de-sac, park, etc. This supports the local restaurants, the venue that is hosting the band (Louisville Underground), and THE BAND! While people watch the free concert, they are encouraged to donate $15/person. Thanks to our amazing sponsors, the entire donation goes to local businesses in need (minus a tip for the band).

If your business is doing well and you’d like to support those who are struggling through this crisis, you don’t need to watch the concert to be a part of the solution. You can simply donate to Louisville Rising and witness the immediate effect of your donation on your neighbors.

If your business is hurting and doing everything it can to survive, ask for help. We’re here.

New Mural Downtown!

Artists Chris Carlson and Nate Baranowski create new mural Downtown!
950 Spruce St.

There’s a new mural Downtown delighting passers-by along the Via Artista, the alley just east of Main Street. The owners of 950 Spruce Street, Split Mountain LLC, commissioned a mural for the west wall of the building that has housed many businesses over the years, as well as serving as the Louisville Library before the new Library building was opened in 2006. We felt the blank stucco wall facing towards Main Street was the perfect spot for some public art downtown.

Artist Chris Carlson says, “The concept relates to the fact that the Louisville library used to be located in the 950 building. So the idea is that we are seeing through the wall into a beautiful library space. The mural will also feature prominent historical figures who worked to make the world a better place. We hope the mural will add visual interest to the building and the neighborhood. Hopefully people walking down the sidewalk will stop and have a ’whoa!’ moment when they see the 3D illusion.”
