Downtown Dialogue - What's Up Downtown

TIDBITS

FACES OF DOWNTOWN

Deirdre Mangine
Owner of My Saving Grace

Deirdre was born and raised in California.  Her grandfather immigrated to the USA from Italy with a large group that settled in the Central Valley.  Deirdre remembers walking down Main Street with her mom and visiting her grandfather at his grocery store.  As she got older she would continue to visit her grandfather downtown, even after he retired from his grocery store and settled into his Wine and Roses Shop.  "My grandfather would sit in front of his shop and visit with everyone who walked by.  His passion was the people and if he sold a bottle of wine or a plant then that was the icing on the cake".

She too has a passion for the people.  A career in sales has taken Deirdre around the world, but has also kept her from making connections with her community.  My Saving Grace is her connection to a community and she loves it.  Visiting with the local residents as well as the people that visit from all over the United States is her "Saving Grace" and if she sells a pair of shoes, a handbag, or one of the gifts from her featured local artisans, it's the icing on the cake.  Please stop by for a visit soon!

Historic Preservation Building

This month in conjunction with the Historic Preservation Commission, we are featuring:

The Stecker Family Houses
720 and 722 Pine Street

Early Louisville contained several family home complexes. One of these was the Stecker homes. 720 Pine was built in 1902, and 722 Pine in 1908. The original home in the group was 633 LaFarge, built by carpenter Herman Fischer, as were the other homes. All three houses were in the same family for over 100 years. Both houses are very similar, but still slightly different, Craftsman Bungalow-style structures.

Agatha and Joseph Stecker (or Stecher or Stacher), 720 Pine, came from Austria in 1881. The Steckers kept cows and sold milk, delivered in 5-pound lard pails, according to a family history. The Steckers' daughter Annie married Robert Kerr, born in Colorado of Irish and Canadian parents. Daughters Alma and Bertha lived at 633 LaFarge. Descendants included the Kerr and Brennan families.

AND.....Did you know??? During WWI Joseph Pilates was incarcerated as an enemy of the state in a camp with many others considered 'enemies of the state' consisting of many buildings. Each building held at least 100 men. When they were hit with the deadly Spanish Flu he created his exercise program by cutting mattresses in half (creating his first reformer) and attaching the springs to the headboards and foot boards. He was prudent in making sure his unit did their exercises EVERY day. The result?? All men in the other buildings perished, but his in unit EVERY single person survived, proving that Movement is the key to good health! How this parallels with what we are experiencing in our lifetime is amazing. Come check us out and see how Pilates can improve your health and wellness!
